“I’m Abu, and on May 9th, 2011, I borrowed from HomeShop a blank white notebook for a duration of two years. In these two years I would like to fill in the contents of the notebook, a part of which will be based upon specific conversations carried out with members of HomeShop.”

Now really exactly one half year after the opening of HomeShop at Jiaodaokou Beiertiao and a dense period of activity, we come to a moment of conferring to a calmer period of assessment and reflection of our efforts. This calmness may stem from the recent (though not first attempt) stalling of certain web-based initiatives by big uncles above, including this website and the rePLACE project with its upcoming Beijing launch. It becomes therefore a natural next question to consider what things may be singled out for consideration by various audiences, what sensitive words could strike the fancy of those near and far. What does it take to make you notice, oh lover, and what does it take for you not to, scannerbot? Publicity is a series of picks and reviews, wooing whispers or a keyword engine——not so much a declaration of what is right or true, but perhaps merely a way of observing, admitting preferential treatment. Let us look at introspection from the perspective of what has been spit out in the last months. May you be forewarned, although there is a subtle difference between fermentation and rotting, this is what BALLSINESS has still been mounting, ever slowly, y e s…working on it.

For now, a picklist of recently reverberating sensitivities, as told through certain key activities which put them into motion. This is not to insinuate that they are forbidden in any way, but there are consequences which, by way of their identification, we can only hope to gain a larger perspective.

Housing prices continue to soar in Beijing after the change in property buying regulations, such that a restriction in the number of properties (two for Beijingers, one for waidiren) a family may possess in their name at one time has pushed many homeowners to raise rent incomes, meaning the city’s renters—especially now at the dawn of a mysterious moon harkening the convening of a local Break-Up Club—shall suffer ever greatly. The search for low-cost housing for these young residents moving out of ex-boyfriend/girlfriend’s flats keeps competition fast and fierce, and as HomeShop neighbour Fan laoshi explains, “There’s no need to even advertise a room for rent, because word gets out so quickly our extra room was snatched up in a day or two.”

The following is a purely speculative stream of associations made on the part of the reporter, but the recent discovery that a small storefront space at Xiaojingchang Hutong number 6 had been put back on the market may very well be attributed to such a love-afflicted dynamic. Sources reveal that the young Chinese female tenant who inhabited the space after its term as HomeShop was rarely seen, but when at home was often accompanied by a tall Western male. Now that the space has been returned to the market, we can only make further speculations as to her latest whereabouts and latest boyfriends. All that remains is the collective nostalgia of short-lived Ikea furniture and a now tattered vinyl sign out front with a “家” character on it in a generic blue font.

大陆漂流.中国 Continental Drift China（2011年5月）

A post-drift discussion and later, the post-post-discussion lend to a complexly felt 沉浮 response after all that drifting. As Cici explains, chénfú pertains to a vertically oriented drift, similar to bobbing in water, whereas 漂流 piāoliú—as in the drift—may include more of a horizontal movement over geography and terrain. Though those of us from HomeShop stopped short of all the landscapes on this particular journey, our experiences in Beijing and Wuhan mark certain ambivalences between the 漂流 & the 沉浮, research for future writing or reflection & site for embedded experience and production, and also perhaps between structured programming & open play. Such struggles are not simply binary, as we note amidst certain ‘networks of validation’ that we search and flounder for the ways to balance, in and out of quandary. These are searches of organisation, searches of freedom within self-initiated systems of being together. They can move in all sorts of directions both vertical and lateral, but where ‘possible future models’ could be engaged remains to be seen. A publication, perhaps.

Without having asked too many questions about the others, QU was highly satisfied with his grasp of 徐坦 XU Tan’s keywords performance at 米店 Detour restaurant, one of our local eateries and gathering spots. From the mention of only a few words here and there, we are able to delve very deeply into some very crucial subjects, including ___, ___, and ___. Keywords here are used as proof of our abilities to communicate in a productive way, but the following event left our bodies a bit more sensitive; see entry on the HomeShop Library Opening and the Happy Friends Reading Group.

Our keywords found heated barbaric inundation during the last Happy Friends Reading Group meeting coinciding with the opening of the HomeShop library. ‘Value‘ may not have been an intended discussion point for Borges’ “Library of Babel”, but several people were able to nod astoundingly at the disarray of miscommunication in the confounded attempts to assess sources for our own collective stream of consciousness. A movement towards response should not be a target of accusation, but in playing a game such as these group dynamics infer, we should perhaps always know who holds the ball and in which court. One cannot necessarily assume that affinities lead to team spirit, or worse, war-like mongreling, but as it were the very dissonances that our languages made felt resulted in a much more played-out performance rather than reading. Language is not common, but laughter is.

Note on “absurdity”:  there is a way out, or strategy, as advised by two of our finest young representatives, but one admires the other for his ability “to get serious”. More on this issue to follow; see WEAR journal number three.

Poetry and language, or a still crucial nearing of metaphors and the frameworks that blind us. We always trade in oversimplified examples, such as pulling a tree from the ground, snails as food or medicine, and knowing whether the fish is happy or not. None of these riddles has been solved, but there is fear that the nearing could wreak an irreparable splintering. One compassioned shoulder claims that the smallness resulting from one’s mind being changed is what leads to a certain embarrassment or discomfort, but the same could be said about making certain aging affirmations that recur over and over again. Sometimes, a desolation comes because we haven’t changed our minds yet.

Looking around these sterile surroundings at the motley crowd I am part of, I find myself passing judgments in web-like combinations oscillating between curiosity and self-identification; knowing (or thinking) this could be it. My fellow passenger could kill me—but then we’d all die, myself and all the other people in this line (this is beyond profiling, foregoing the preparation for militancy, toward surrender). This means that in such a situation, a kind of bond is formed. An existential family that, like the other kinds of kinship, must be endured and appreciated while in existence and that, when we die together, will live on in one form or another. Group portrait of misfortune and unpredictability.

I can look around and feel something for these people and project narratives onto their expressions, clothes and luggage, onto their futures (which are now linked) and think, I could get to know you for the rest of my short life on this tiny utopian shuttle in the sky. Our common fate, which we approach calmly, eclipses the differences between us and by this turn those judged as our antagonists in this larger superficial society, our competitors, those who arouse or repel us, who make us aware of our lack, become the temporarily unforesakeable members of our family. The feeling of threat from these strangers attenuates and we can imagine a new airplane politics of mutual respect and mutually assured destruction, preferring nobody. Where once was a mask whose grotesque aura of annoyance could only get in the way of my resolving my own annoyance, now is a countenance reflecting its tacit and personal wishes, its relations of tenderness, among which, by the end, I will also count.

Except of course for the regimentation of seating and the issue of classes, service roles and the overwhelming power of the machine itself. To imagine tearing out the seats and sitting on the rumbling carpeted floor in a chaotic gathering clustered of affinities would furthermore suggest the foreknowledge of an exceptional situation, one that the passengers simply would not accept. Alas the bond of misfortune could hardly alter how our solidarity is expressed.

Keegan lumbered in and squeezed in next to the pill-shaped window. He was a big ex-soldier (Afghanistan), and he took up my armrest, and I was bothered by him from the beginning. Groaning about his sweating bottom or the wailing babies who deprived him of sleep, he suffered from a hangover from the Contiki tour he had just finished. A last blast for his brother who had been in 2 car crashes in 3 days back in Canada. I did feel sorry for their misfortunes. I held my elbows in and propped up my thick book, passing over the same page distractedly over several hours, this is a great film he said of the Mark Whalberg image on our little independent screens. Later he showed me some photos on his I-phone of the cities he hated, and the fun he had. Toward the last 2 hours we got into a disagreement over conspiracy theories, look on the Internet he urged, the zionists are spraying poison over the crops in planes just like these. He asked me to smuggle a bottle of vodka through customs for him, which I agreed to; then becoming impatient as I waited at the luggage belt, he took it back and walked out. We both ended up having our bags searched by overzealous small town inspectors, I tried to hide behind a pillar so he wouldn’t look back and roll his eyes. I can now only imagine Keegan complaining as our airplane fell into the North Atlantic.

在交道口北二条的家作坊开幕将近半年之后的今天，我们渐渐地尝试另一种类型的开幕式，这不是一个庆祝大事件的活动，而是一种对很多平凡日子中的某一天的理 解形式。谁说数量不重要？万物库自家作坊开幕时就已经悄悄存在了，虽并没有适当的头衔或组织形式去赋予它价值，这些物品只是贮存了起来，而经历了六个月， 我们可以站在这个小角落之外足够“自豪”地（傻傻地）说一个系统已经存在，或者至少是一个使得它可以提供服务的组织形式。

这种收集可以是关于一些本源所属权的所谓的形式（我们尽量标记每一个物品的来源），这表明了一种对集体的不同态度，这可能不仅仅是为了数量上的增加，而是为了考虑更多赠送和交换的其他形式。

谁说数量不重要？如果你向万物库捐赠三件物品，可以是书、工具或者其他大家感兴趣的有用的媒介，你就能成为万物库的会员去借阅其他物品。借阅时间灵活，可以是从几天到几年，由你所借阅的物品性质和你的需要决定。数量或者时间决定了你与物品之间及你与我们之间的关系。

Almost exactly half a year after the opening of HomeShop at Jiaodaokou Beiertiao, we venture mildly into another opening of sorts, one which declares itself not to mark the event but as a form of understanding the many amidst a few. Who said quantity does not matter? The HomeShop library has existed quietly since our first days here, without proper titling or forms of organisation to lend it the sense of value that archives tend to garner, and now in our sixth month we can stand back proudly—nerdily—from this diminuitive corner enough to say that an operation exists, or at least an attempted form of organisation that allows itself as an offering. The collection could be about some supposed form of traced ownership (we attempt to label the provenance of each item), and this suggests a different attitude towards collectivity that may go beyond mere expansion towards other forms of gift and exchange.

Who said quantity doesn’t matter? If you donate three items to the library, of a nature including books, tools or other media useful and of interest to a larger public, you will be entitled to join as a library member for borrowing other items from the collection. Loans can thus be made for flexible periods spanning a few days up to a few years, depending upon the nature of the item and your need. Quantity, or time, matters.

In conjunction with this announcement, the library will be open for your perusal and borrowing, as it has been already, though perhaps certain aspects of organisation will be made clear where they were less so before. There is a question as to whether this serves to facilitate or deter from participation, as should be asked of all our social forms in general, so thus let this Saturday serve as one experiment among the many.

• browse the collection of not yet 10,000 items, including literature, film, small devices and more
• book-making workshop (all day long, drop in anytime)
• free giveaway of library members’ hand silk-screened handkerchiefs for wiping your mouth or your tears (while supplies last)

2011年1月6日，小寒的北京，凤凰岭的冬天。我们在小毛驴农场的地，正在休息。

2011年2月19日，雨水的北京。没有雨，晴！那片有树的地，仍在休息。整个2月偶尔会有雪下来，落在几排经冬的韭菜根上。其他，什么都没有。

2011年3月21日，春分的北京。暖和！我们到小毛驴翻地，太阳照得很热烈的时候，我们总在幻想，是否现在就可以播种？结果总被告知，到了晚上，此地依然零下。太着急了！

2011年4月5日，北京入春。当日，卫生部从北京、天津和河南等地区露天种植的菠菜中，发现微量的放射物碘-131。我们的韭菜，在那棵树下，开始逢春蓬勃。

2011年4月16日  小毛驴农场开锄节。韭菜茂盛，2011年的第一次收获，从它们开始。日历餐厅饺子工作坊，用收获的韭菜在开锄节包了120个饺子，扣除成本外的收入87元，捐给了
日本地震灾区的农民。四月也是播种季节：紫甘蓝、香菜、薄荷、小白菜、玉米、西葫芦、茄子、辣椒、西红柿、黄瓜……在这三十平米的树下，蔬菜们正在开大会..

2011年5月6日，立夏的北京。因为耕种，我们惊觉北京雨水之少，每次劳作，松土、浇水是重头戏。我们的菠菜转眼间就老了，香菜也是。西红柿开始爬藤开花，紫甘蓝张开大手兴
高采烈，茄子蔫头蔫脑，生菜老趴在地上装死……

2011年6月3日，芒种快要到来的北京。这一晚，我们邀请您，来到日历餐厅在HomeShop的家，跟我们一起分享：收获的喜悦与食物的历程。

因为参与了种植的经过，我们开始了解自然生长的蔬菜，从田间到我们的餐桌，需要时间，并非随时可得。方便消费，付出的代价，便是一切以速生为目的的：大棚、化肥、农药、添加剂、膨大剂……砰，西瓜爆炸了……

日历餐厅是一个慢餐厅，它什么时候开张，由地里的蔬菜说了算。这次，我们的地和蔬菜们讨论了5个月，终于决定：6月开张！好吧，欢迎你来!

部分“大陆漂流－中国”项目的成员将于六月五日聚集在 “哪里哪里”艺术空间，开一个研讨会，作为这次项目的闭幕活动。

“大陆漂流.中国”项目将众多的艺术家，策展人，理论家，与活动家召集到一起，共同探索当 代地理政治转化对于公共框架与亲密生存 空间的影响。

“大陆漂流.中国”的成员自五月十八日出发，集体作战，在过程中寻找共性，分享体验。通过信任的个人关系，引入各地的本土团体社区，以探索，创造和维系新的艺术的关系。在这样的一种精神下，这次中国漂流向个体敞开了语境，在这里探讨艺术这个作为深刻反思周遭的途径的各种可能。

本次大陆漂流项目由 武汉的“我们家”青年自治实验室，北京的“家作坊”，“哪里哪里”策展联盟，与芝加哥的“罗盘”（美国中西部激进文化走廊）等组织共同合作举办。

Please join us for a public discussion with participants of the Continental Drift China project.

Continental Drift China brings together artists, curators, theorists, and activists to explore the impacts that current geopolitical transformations are having on the public frameworks and intimate environments of existence. The diverse group that began it tour in China on May 18^th seeks to share experiences, find affinities in process, and discover in local communities the personal links that can generate and sustain new engagements for visual arts. The group’s route in China has taken them around the older neighborhoods of Beijing, the ports of Tianjin, the hills and waterways of Wuhan, and the rural areas of Lijiang. Built on a premise of open dialogue, China Drift provides an opportunity for individuals to consider the ways in which art can foster a deeper reflection on the forces shaping the world around us.

The Continental Drift China has been developed by Womenjia Youth Autonomy Lab, HomeShop and the Where Where Curatorial Collective, in conjunction with Compass (of the Midwest Radical Culture Corridor).

《此地无声》是一个将要发在北京东城区的艺术活动。所有参与的艺术家，声音艺术家及声音工作者们将以“声音”作为主题并且运用“声音”作为材料完成各自的 作品。作品呈现的方式将为装置、行为与音乐表演等等。作品放置的地点是剧场、艺术空间以及一些公共空间，活动持续时间为一周。在此期间还会发生一些相关讲 座与工作坊等项目。活动组织方会制作一份地图，上面会标示出所有艺术作品放置的地点。这些作品的分布将以国子监为中心，步行20分钟即可到达的范围内。

这个艺术项目希望通过建立一种与公共交流的方式，使艺术家们关注艺术作品与公共空间之间的关系。通过“声音”，这个被我们日常所忽视的感知方式，找到隐藏在人们感知深处的听觉及意识的共鸣；同时也希望通过这种互动参与的方式、通过寻找与发现，让人们关心生活的周遭。

The Sound of Nowhere is an art project to be embedded deep in the recesses of Dongcheng District, scattered in the vicinities of Andingmen and Gulou. This is an experiment with sound and geography, whereby artists and ‘sound laborers’ will for the duration of one week present workshops, lectures, installations and performances for various locations on the map—from art spaces, a theatre, restaurants to a hair salon. The projects will be traceable from a printed map that guides participants for short walks within a 20 minute radius to find and experience these works as interventions and exchanges with the surrounding public space. By working from a conceptual recognition of sound, we seek to locate and initiate certain resonances between this often overlooked sense and its relation to the noise of our daily urban environs.

地上On the ground:

玉米 corn and 南瓜 pumpkin competing over a rectangle of dirt revealed by the removal of a section of cement.

turtle den becomes a jungle, and potted plants struggle on. We think the clay-rich soil from the riverbed may not have been nutritious enough for some plants.

黄瓜 cucumber and 紫苏（大叶) shiso, like many other plants, are complemented by a deceptive and ubiquitous 杂草 weed.

Once these 杂草 weeds are removed, you can see how small these 紫苏 shiso plants have remained.

菠菜 spinach, 芝麻菜 rucola, 香菜 cilantro, and 杂草 weeds.

屋顶上On the roof:

(L) other 紫苏 shiso crops benefited from a transplant; (R) 秋葵荚 okra

(L) green beans and weeds; (R) small tomato plants and weeds

土豆 potato stacking: when the 土豆 potato plant pokes above the soil by about 20cm, cover it over again with more soil. The potato plant will revert to root state, and will grow more potatoes in a single area. This can be repeated again and again, forming a sort of potato tower, increasing productivity in one area by moving vertically.

The roof system simply uses a small platform to keep the boxes from direct contact with the roof, over areas supported by structural walls downstairs.

变形Transformations:

The 南瓜 pumpkin grows out of its area, and needs some structural support.

Digging down halfway, we find the 堆肥compost in the white pot has produced 好的土good soil. It is used to fill a box for a transplant.

Behind the ecstatic 南瓜 pumpkins are three 西红柿 tomato plants that need to move out.

甜菜根 Beets also need more space, and are transplanted to a larger area.

A transplanted 南瓜 pumpkin pouts. Notorious over-achievers (in German: streber). A question that comes to mind: Even if we are successful, what happens to all the stuff that is produced day after day—ideally becoming more healthy soil in the process—but still, basically dictating a general structural expansion, expansion of material, surplus, excess. Where does all this material go? Can we ever really generate a system that recycles? Or do we constantly need more land to exploit, more time, more converts? This in a way illustrates the paradox of self-sufficiency in the city. Surplus is the norm, in fact. Implying: we must go beyond ourselves..
